Compared with pure tungsten electrode, lanthanated tungsten electrode has a lower work function and higher electron emission efficiency, resulting in easier arc starting and greater arc stability. Under the same diameter and current conditions, burn-off rates are generally lower and service life is longer. Today, 2% lanthanated tungsten electrode (WL20) has become one of the most widely used electrodes in automated welding, robotic welding, and high-end TIG welding equipment. 2. Which Is Better: Pure Tungsten Electrode or Ceriated Tungsten Electrode?
Ceriated tungsten electrode (WC20) contains approximately 2% cerium oxide (CeO?). Its greatest advantage is excellent arc-starting performance at low current. In thin-sheet welding, precision welding, and low-current welding applications, ceriated tungsten electrode typically establishes a stable arc more easily than pure tungsten electrode. For welding electronic components, precision instruments, and thin-wall tubing, ceriated tungsten electrode has become a mainstream choice. CTIA’s tungsten electrode selection recommendations: (1) Low-current welding of 5-100 A, ceriated tungsten electrode preferred; (2) Precision welding, ceriated tungsten electrode preferred; (3) Conventional AC aluminum welding, pure tungsten electrode remains suitable.

3. How to Choose Between Pure Tungsten Electrode and Zirconiated Tungsten Electrode?
Zirconiated tungsten electrode (WZ8) contains approximately 0.8% zirconium oxide (ZrO?). Its most notable advantage is resistance to tip splitting during AC welding while maintaining a stable balled tip. In AC welding of aluminum and magnesium alloys, zirconiated tungsten electrode is often considered an upgraded alternative to pure tungsten electrode. CTIA’s tungsten electrode selection recommendations: (1) General AC welding, pure tungsten electrode; (2) High-current AC welding, zirconiated tungsten electrode preferred; (3) Aluminum alloy welding, zirconiated tungsten electrode preferred.

Thoriated tungsten electrode (WT20) contains approximately 2% thorium oxide (ThO?). Its electron emission capability is superior to pure tungsten electrode, making it a long-standing choice for DC welding applications. However, because thorium is naturally radioactive, many users now replace thoriated tungsten electrode with lanthanated tungsten electrode or ceriated tungsten electrode.
