What Are Applications of Tungsten Electrode?

What are main applications of CTIA’s tungsten electrodes? CTIA’s tungsten electrodes feature an ultra-high melting point of 3422°C, excellent electron emission capability, outstanding electrical and thermal conductivity, and superior arc erosion resistance. Tungsten electrodes are widely used in arc welding and cutting, resistance welding and Electrical Discharge Machining (EDM), electron beam and X-ray equipment, electric light sources, plasma spraying, and various specialized emerging fields. The major applications of tungsten electrodes are introduced below in six categories.

1.Applications of CTIA’s Tungsten Electrodes in Arc Welding and Cutting
(1) Tungsten Electrode for TIG Welding
Tungsten electrodes serve as cathodes that emit electrons to generate a stable arc in Tungsten Inert Gas (TIG) welding. Typical applications include aerospace structural components, stainless steel pipelines, and precision molds. TIG welding is also commonly known as Gas Tungsten Arc Welding (GTAW).
(2) Tungsten Electrode for Plasma Arc Welding (PAW)
Plasma Arc Welding (PAW) utilizes a highly constricted arc to achieve high-energy-density welding. Tungsten electrodes must withstand extremely high thermal loads. Zirconiated tungsten electrodes are commonly used for aluminum alloy PAW applications.
(3) Tungsten Electrode for Aluminum Alloy Welding
Aluminum alloy welding is typically performed using AC TIG welding. Zirconiated tungsten electrodes (color code: white) and lanthanated tungsten electrodes (color code: gold) are recommended due to their excellent burn resistance and oxide-cleaning capability.
(4) Tungsten Electrode for Stainless Steel Welding
Stainless steel welding is generally performed using DC TIG welding. Thoriated tungsten electrodes (color code: red) provide easy arc starting and concentrated arcs. Lanthanated tungsten electrodes are commonly used as non-radioactive alternatives.
(5) Tungsten Electrode for Plasma Cutting
For high-current plasma cutting of stainless steel, aluminum, and copper, thoriated tungsten electrodes and lanthanated tungsten electrodes support long-duration continuous operation while producing narrow and smooth cutting edges.
(6) Tungsten Electrode for Arc Cutting
Tungsten electrodes are used as erosion-resistant electrodes in underwater arc cutting and specialized arc cutting equipment. Their high melting point and thermal shock resistance enable efficient cutting of metallic materials.

2.Applications of CTIA’s Tungsten Electrodes in Resistance Welding and Electrical Discharge Machining
(1) Tungsten Electrode for Resistance Welding
Serving as a conductive and pressurizing element, tungsten electrode is used to weld highly conductive material such as copper and aluminum, and its high hardness prevents deformation under high temperature and pressure.
(2) Tungsten Electrode for Spot Welding
Used for spot welding of micro part or precision electronic component, small-diameter tungsten electrode enables extremely small weld joint and is commonly used for battery connector strip, relay contact, etc.
(3) Tungsten Electrode for Electrical Discharge Machining (EDM)
Serving as a tool electrode, it erodes metal workpiece through pulse discharge. Its high melting point and low wear rate make it suitable for machining difficult-to-cut material such as tungsten carbide, die steel, and titanium alloy, with outstanding performance in precision machining of deep hole, narrow slot, and irregular cavity.

3.Applications of CTIA’s Tungsten Electrodes in Electron Beam and X-Ray Equipment
(1) Tungsten Electrode for Electron Beam Welding (EBW)
Serving as electron-emitting cathodes, tungsten electrodes generate high-energy electron beams for welding aerospace engine components, nuclear fuel assemblies, and other high-precision structures.
(2) Tungsten Electrode for Electron Gun Cathodes
Used in electron gun within scientific instrument such as Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) and electron beam lithography equipment, tungsten cathode emits electron beam, requiring extremely low work function and long-term stability.
(3) Tungsten Electrode for X-Ray Tubes
Filament and target surface in X-ray tube frequently utilize tungsten electrode to emit electron under high voltage, bombarding metal target to generate X-ray for medical imaging and industrial flaw detection.

4.Applications of CTIA’s Tungsten Electrodes in Electric Light Sources and Display Equipment
(1) Tungsten Electrode for Stage Lighting
Short-arc xenon lamp in stage spotlight and film/television lighting equipment adopts tungsten electrode to provide high-brightness, color-temperature-stable arc light.
(2) Tungsten Electrode for Discharge Lamps
Including pulse xenon lamp, ultraviolet germicidal lamp, and automotive xenon headlight, tungsten electrode carries high-frequency, high-voltage ignition and long-term discharge, with barium tungsten electrode commonly used.

5.Applications of CTIA’s Tungsten Electrodes in Plasma Thermal Spraying and Surface Engineering
Tungsten Electrode for Plasma Spraying
Tungsten electrode generates high-temperature jet (15,000°C) inside plasma spray gun to melt and spray ceramic or metal powder onto workpiece surface, forming wear-resistant or thermal barrier coating. Typical application includes aerospace engine blade, automotive piston ring, and papermaking roller, with thoriated tungsten electrode or yttriated tungsten electrode commonly used.

6.Applications of CTIA’s Tungsten Electrodes in Specialized and Emerging Fields
(1) Tungsten Electrode for Vacuum Electronic Devices
In vacuum electronic device such as traveling wave tube (TWT), magnetron, and klystron, tungsten electrode serves as cathode or grid to undertake electron emission task under high temperature, acting as core component of radar, satellite communication, and microwave heating equipment. Distinct from electron gun cathode in section three, the latter is primarily used for electron beam generation in scientific instrument.
(2) Tungsten Needle Electrode for Minimally Invasive Surgery
Used for high-frequency electrosurgical knife, argon plasma coagulation knife, or radiofrequency ablation equipment. Tungsten needle electrode diameter can be as fine as 0.1 mm, remaining sharp and high-temperature resistant to precisely cut or coagulate tissue under endoscopy, utilized in surgery such as gastrointestinal polypectomy and tumor ablation. Its advantage lies in non-sticking property, low tissue damage, and repeatable sterilization capability.

Selecting correct tungsten electrode type is key to ensuring process quality, efficiency, and cost control. Backed by over 30 years of tungsten electrode manufacturing experience, CTIA GROUP provides full-process production capabilities spanning high-purity tungsten powder preparation, isostatic pressing, hydrogen sintering, to precision grinding.
